Student Testimonials

Kind words from kind souls.

  1. Dave is a superior bass teacher. Not all brilliant musicians have what it takes to connect to students, but he's definitely got it. His strengths are his background of uniting great technique with a superb ear and feel and he imparts that to you without making you feel talked down to or belittled. No matter what genre you play in, no matter what your level of accomplishment, lessons with Dave will undoubtedly improve your playing so long as you do your part as well. Working with Dave doesn't just make you a better bass player, it makes you a better musician.

  2. Dave is an amazing teacher. He took me through every lesson and never got upset when I asked a million questions. He takes the time to get to know you and is overall really genuine. I can’t emphasis it enough how talented he is as a teacher and a musician. Dave makes time for you and even offers Skype lessons which are really cool too. I would recommend him to anyone of any age or any skill level!

  3. Dave DeMarco is an incredible musician with a tremendous ability to teach music to all levels, and very personable. I began my musical journey rather late at the age of 43, trying to learn how to play bass. After 15 years of stumbling through various approaches, I achieved a working level of physical playing ability, enough to play in a band. But there was a huge hole in my understanding of music, and my ability to communicate musically, so I decided to take lessons with Dave in April 2017. For the first time in my life I am on the path to becoming a real musician, not just someone who plays bass. Thanks Dave!

  4. "Dave is the man. I started lessons with Dave when I was 13 and continued for about three years. There was never a dull lesson and his proficiency on bass, keyboards and drums helped me to have a well-rounded learning experience with him. We worked on funk, alternative rock, jazz, classical, blues, classic rock, and of course, music theory. He's also a nice guy. I haven't had a lesson with him in a while, but I know I can email or call him anytime and set up another one. I highly recommend taking lessons with him." - Jake Irwin (The Penetrators)

  5. "I was a long time, off and on bass player, with no formal training or lessons. When my kids got older I decided to get serious about bass. Fortunately I found Dave. He is the rare combination of great teacher and fellow music lover that actually makes lesson and practice fun. I am currently living in Istanbul Turkey, and playing bass for a wild Turkish rock band. Having the time of my life and I owe it to Dave!"

  6. I have been taking bass lessons with Dave for over 10 years and we have covered theory, melodic dictation, ear training and more. We have worked on Funk, Jazz, Fusion, Rock, the Fake Book you name it. He also plays instruments in music lessons with me. I will work with Dave till I run out of time; the time I have spent with him is invaluable.

  1. "I've been taking lessons with Dave for almost three years now. He's an excellent source of info of all things musical. He takes the time to listen and tailor lessons to my specific interest for that day, week or month. The coolest thing is that he will explain the whys of playing certain note choices instead of just showing how to play a certain riff. Scheduling is very flexible, rarely have I gone without my weekly lesson. I study at the Balto site and periodically Dave will put the bass down and jump on the drums which gives the advantage being able to apply how you as the bass player fit in to the rhythm section.

  2. "There are two types of bass player/teachers in this world. Those who are excellent players, and those who are excellent teachers.Well Dave just happens to be both. Dave also breaks things down into small parts for those of us who get overwhelmed by challenging styles of music and he keeps you from giving up. He takes the fear out of taking on new challenges and is very encouraging. The man knows virtually every style of music and from the first lesson to your last, keeps you on a plan so you know why you are there. Great personality, very easy to get along with as well.”

  3. "Before I met Dave, I was a 98 pound weakling. Now, NOBODY kicks sand in MY face!" Ok seriously, my experience with Dave has been positive and incredibly beneficial. As a "weekend warrior" in a local cover band, I need to learn and adapt to varying styles of playing. Dave gave me the tools to get and remain SOLID! I'm still attempting to apply those tools on a regular basis. Whether you're a seasoned vet or just learning "Smoke On The Water", we're ALL looking to get to that next level. My experience is that Dave DeMarco can help get me there.

  4. Dave is an outstanding bass teacher. He is well versed in all styles of music and was able to help me progress in my study of a wide range of music, from jazz to R&B to rock. His teaching style is very comfortable and he draws upon many different aspects of both music and life to help facilitate growth as a musician. I would highly recommend Dave to anyone who is interested in becoming a better bassist and musician. Whether you're just starting out or have played for many years, you'll definitely benefit from studying with Dave!

  1. A consummate pro. From equipment to gigging to theory to technique, Dave is unsurpassed in his knowledge and ability to communicate. I've been a regular student of his for more than 5 years and each and every lesson, whether in person or by Skype, has been extremely valuable to my bass playing and general musicianship. Learning to play an instrument is a journey, and Dave is an outstanding guide.

  2. For anyone who really wants to learn the ins and outs of bass playing, I highly recommend Dave DeMarco. He is passionate about the bass, highly knowledgeable in all aspects of musicality, and provides flexibility to each student. For me, there are times I need some insights learning a certain song; other times, I want to concentrate on music theory, so I have the background to play just about anything and actually know what I'm doing. Dave can easily create the lesson for exactly what I need--that's something you don't find with the average instructor.

  3. I've been playing for years w/ no formal instruction. I met Dave at one of his gigs & was inspired by how easily he navigated around the bass & marveled at his incredible plucking speed. I wanted to have that same ability! I then saw he also gives lessons so I decided to jump in & correct years of bad habits to improve my skills. At my 1st lesson he evaluated my playing & made a plan to get me on the path to my goals. His attention to detail, patience & exercises have helped me overcome huge obstacles & build confidence. I still have a long way to go & plan to continually rely on Dave’s guidance!

  4. "Dave is a very flexible teacher. You can make your lesson plan what you want it to be or you can follow his program. I recommend a combination at my age. I mean I'm older than the teacher! Whether your application is at home or on stage, he still treats you with the same level of respect. His knowledge of music is so well rounded, you can throw anything at him. This helps if you suffer from ADD like most of us do."
